{"id":4134,"date":"2025-02-18T11:56:06","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T11:56:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/speirenua.org\/?p=4134"},"modified":"2025-02-18T11:56:06","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T11:56:06","slug":"mountjoy-grappling-with-an-overcrowding-crisis-says-governor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/speirenua.org\/?p=4134","title":{"rendered":"Mountjoy grappling with an &#8216;overcrowding crisis&#8217;, says governor"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The governor of Mountjoy Prison has said he is grappling with an \u201covercrowding crisis\u201d, with 922 inmates in a prison with maximum official capacity for 755 people.<\/p>\n<p>David Tracey said the crisis is replicated across the prison system, with Limerick&#8217;s male and female prisons, Cork Prison, and D\u00f3chas Women\u2019s Prison also severely overcrowded.<\/p>\n<p>To cram prisoners in, Mr Tracey said they have installed 114 bunk beds into small single cells and squeezed a further 82 mattresses onto floors of other single cells.<\/p>\n<p>All the single cells have an open toilet.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA prison should be 90% capacity to give you wriggle room to manage for incidents, but we are at 120%,\u201d Mr Tracey said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are in a crisis here with overcrowding.
