In this regard, Ireland has come a long way in recent years. We still <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishlegal.com\/articles\/cautious-welcome-to-european-report-on-irish-prison-population\" style=\"color: rgb(242, 241, 236);\">largely avoid<\/a><span style=\"color: rgb(242, 241, 236);\"> assuming that harsh punishment makes us safer, a trap some neighbours have succumbed to. We <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.journals.uchicago.edu\/doi\/abs\/10.1086\/652230\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color: rgb(242, 241, 236);\">know<\/a><span style=\"color: rgb(242, 241, 236);\"> that punishment does not deter people from offending.
